The objective of this qualification is to allow an individual to meet a requirement set by law to undertake a specific role. The qualification is designed for those learners working in, or preparing to work in, any industry that involves the retail sale of alcohol. It is a prerequisite for anyone who wishes to hold a personal licence. Anyone wishing to sell or authorise the sale of alcohol by retail on licensed premises must hold a personal licence. Learners gaining this qualification will understand the main requirements of the Licensing Act 2003, the importance of promoting the licensing objectives and the legal responsibilities of a personal licence holder.

Qualification overview and objective

The objective of this qualification is to allow an individual to meet a requirement set by law to undertake a specific role. The qualification is designed for those learners working in, or preparing to work in, any industry that involves the retail sale of alcohol. It is a prerequisite for anyone who wishes to hold a personal licence. Anyone wishing to sell or authorise the sale of alcohol by retail on licensed premises must hold a personal licence. Learners gaining this qualification will understand the main requirements of the Licensing Act 2003, the importance of promoting the licensing objectives and the legal responsibilities of a personal licence holder.

Who is it for?

This qualification is suitable for:

  • licensed premises owners, managers, supervisors, or workers who need a qualification to be able to apply for a personal licence or to demonstrate that they meet legislative requirements

Entry to the qualification is at the discretion of the centre. Specific skills, knowledge, understanding, or other qualification(s) required before taking this qualification include:

  • relevant work experience in the licensed trade sector

This qualification is mainly taken by owner-managers of licensed premises and individuals employed or seeking employment as:

  • supervisors or managers of licensed premises
  • bar staff
  • sales personnel in licensed retail outlets

Entry requirements

To register for this qualification, learners are required to meet the following entry requirements:

Age Ranges

This qualification is approved for delivery to learners aged 16 or above. However, a Personal Licence cannot be applied until the age of 18.

Language

It is advised that learners have a minimum of Level 1 in Literacy or numeracy or equivalent

ID requirements

We can accept the following as the proof of a learner’s identity:
• a valid passport (any nationality)
• a signed UK photocard driving licence
• a valid warrant card issued by HM forces or the police
• another photographic ID card, e.g. employee ID card, student ID card, travel card etc.
If you are not able to produce any of the forms of photographic identification listed above, we may accept another form of identification containing a signature, for example, a credit
card. Identification by a third-party representative, such as a line manager, human resources manager, or invigilator, will also be accepted.

Progression opportunities

On successful completion of this qualification, you may wish to continue your development by undertaking one of the following qualifications:
• NVQs and apprenticeships in the hospitality sector
• NVQs and apprenticeships in the retail sector
